My Blogging Story

Too much food equals my idea for 24 Posts In 24 Hours falls flat on my face. But I'm still going for all 24 dammit!

I got started blogging because my best friend/partner-in-rhyme Matthew Spencer started a blog on xanga in 2004. Before then I had heard of blogging but never paid much attention to it. The reason I thought Matt's blogging was so great was because he lived in Pittsburgh and I didn't get to see him as much so having a window to his day-to-day was great for me.

In previous years, I kinda semi-blogged, tho at the time I would have called it updating my website. I would post the date and talk about the various things that had happened in the process of recording what I thought was going to be my R&B album Life Turned Into Music. I even had a section on my website that was about all the girls I had some kind of connection too. I wish I could find that page now, it would be a fun read for me to see what 20 year old me thought about certain girls.

The first blogging site I tried out wasn't even xanga tho. I had posted a few entries at another site that I can't remember the name of now, but those were soon shuffled over to xanga. I was a huge xanga fan tho, I had a nice little community of 10 people who I was guaranteed to ready my posts and comment normally and I would do the same. It was a really fun time.

But then people started getting away from it and soon Matt and I were the only ones who were posting. Which I didn't mind but at the time I started this blog and had been cross posting between my two accounts. Once I fell in love with the LJ community, it was a wrap for xanga. That and the fact they were making some God-awful unnecessary changes to the site. Matt still maintains his blog there but his twitter has basically become his blog.

I soon discovered I was addictied to making new blogs. I had this one, a fanfiction LJ, a random type blog called Hyphen-Verse that I created to try to streamline this blog, a music blog on LJ and xanga, and finally a music blog on blogger. The problem would be I would be into the blog at first but then it would eventually lay dormant. The last blog I axed was the Spideyville Unlimited music blog figuring I could just make this blog Spideyville Unlimited and post whatever the hell I wanted and no one would mind. Thankfully, no one has. lol.

Currently, I have this LJ, a video game blog where I blog about my gaming experiences, Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Blog with Matt, and technically, I'm a blogger for a site called Class & Grime that's kinda died off. I don't think I'm opening any other blogs except to hold my new podcasts,. But who knows. I can say that blogging has become a ridiculously large part of my life and I'm grateful for it. I just hope it's easy to give it up someday. lol.

So I currently have three blogs, Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Blog (imusic), Spideyville Unlimited (my music), and this one (personal). How would you guys feel if I combined my music blog with this one? It would mean there would be more music content then regular content  and I'm afraid it might turn off some of you guys. Thoughts?

I recently started covering the NBA Playoffs for my homie Ryan Ventura’s website Class & Grime.com. My second article just went up this morning and I’ll be contributing to the site for the foreseeable future. As long as Ryan holds up his end of the deal and helps out at Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Blog. lol.

Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Podcast – Episode 5: Album Vs. Album #1 – Reasonable Doubt
J.D. and Cox
[info]bhyphen

I realize now that the “guessing” part I added with Nas’ section was not needed since I included the episode description. lol. After going through Nas’ sophomore album we jump right into Jay’s first. Unfair? Slightly. But Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt were two different eras. This comparison is way closer then the one I just mentioned.

Chiv and I continue our first "Album Vs. Album" series. In this first installment, we put former foes Nas and Jay-Z against each other once again as we compare the albums they released in 1996. Chiv explains how he completely ignores "Feelin' It", I take Jay-Z to task over whether "22 Two's" really came off the top of his head or if he wrote it down, and we end things on a somber note as we both "Regret(s)" doing this part of the episode in the first place. Get your Super Mean Pimp on and start listening!

Last Thursday April 23rd was the one year anniversary of Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Blog and April 28th marked the one year anniversary of HHM!!!: The Podcast! To celebrate Chiv and I got together, played some Mario Kart Wii, and listened to Nas’ second album for our first ever Album Vs. Album episode.

Chiv and I begin our "Album Vs. Album" series where we take two albums, break each one of them down and then decide the overall winner. In this first installment, we put former foes Nas and Jay-Z against each other once again as we compare the albums they released in 1996. Be ready as I reveal I have 2Pac on speed dial, Chiv asks Foxy Brown questions she can't hear, and we both cower in fear at the phrase "Nas Is Coming"! As Diddy would say, "Let's go people!"

Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Podcast - Episode 3: The Best Of 2008 Part 2
Me Myself and I
[info]bhyphen

I told you this was a long episode. But I didn't think you'd have the patience to listen to us talk for two hours. Yet. lol. So without further ado...

And we're back! Chiv and Hyphen finish off their two hour long conversation about their favorite hip-hop music of 2008! In this hour, Chiv talks about Murs For President and The Million Dollar Backpack while Hyphen goes in on Paper Trail and 808s & Heartbreak! And as an added bonus if you call now, they'll even throw in honorable mentions and disappointing albums!

Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Podcast - Episode 3: The Best Of 2008 Part 2

Now let's hope it's not 8 months before the next episode.

I Don't Know How Some Will Feel About This Cover So Here's A Cut. )

Not a dream! We actually did a new episode. And it was so long we had to make it into two episodes! Instead of talking about the eras of hip-hop (which will get done) we sat down and talked about our favorite music on 2008. Best episode ever! lmao.

Just when you thought they had given up, BEHOLD! The return of Chivalry and B Hyphen aka Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Podcast! After a 7 month layoff, the guys got together on New Year's Eve to recap their favorite music of 2008 by picking 5 albums or mixtapes that they couldn't get enough of. This is part one so go to Episode 3 immediately after you finish this one. Happy 2009!

 On LJ.

I no longer have the xanga site. Well, it's there, but I'm not posting there anymore. So I'm LJ exclusive now. Whoo! lol.

I've been mostly busy redesigning B Hyphen.com. It's not ready yet tho, don't look. I made a new music blog at http://itshyphen.blogspot.com. I added some stuff to the Soundvizion myspace.

I added a whole crapload of videos to Youtube. I'm only posting two tho. Here's a playlist from my last show at Bucks.

The other night, I got to talk to my friend I've known for 8 years, Erik Fromme aka [info]efromme for the first time. He asked me about the status of my podcast and then shared some thoughts on hip-hop and my music. And I recorded it.  We talked on the phone like schoolgirls. lol. Also, check out the Marvel Anthology and B Hyphen.com promotion!

I also have been updating Hip-Hop Manifesto!!!: The Blog pretty often again too. So I'm doing pretty nice on the computer.

If only writing and music came as easy.

So we'll see what happens. I hope to get this blog more content than just my twitter posts. But that's always my goal isn't it.

I'm going out of town this weekend, won't be back until Sunday. And I work all Thanksgiving week. Not cool. But it is cash. Enough for now.

Listening to Mickey Factz' new mixtape. WOW.

Pretty average day today. It rained.

I was walking matter of fact and I saw this car pull up real slow behind me. So I figured I knew who it was. Nope. I paused my ipod and turned around. This guy asked me where I was heading and I told him just down the street. He said okay and said something along the lines that he was going to give me a ride if I needed it. I thanked him and declined and he went down the road.

Now...I looked myself over. Cargo shorts, WVU hoodie, Jordan 14's. I didn't look like I needed help.

So this guy was actually asking if I wanted a ride out of the goodness of his heart or he had weird intentions.

For a 25 year old. lol.

I'm going with good intentions.

Then I asked myself if I would have stopped for joe schmoe on the street in the rain.

Doubtful.

Than a couple bars came in my head. Then a song title.

We'll see if it goes any further.

I put the first real posts on HHM!!!: The Blog that I'm truly proud of in awhile...http://www.hiphopmanifesto.org

Got the new Better In The Dark finally.

Caught up on all the Angry Video Game Nerd episodes I missed last night.

Messed with that Mugen program most of the night. Now I'm over it. lol.

I guess today was more eventful than I thought...

It isn't my fault. I went to the station so I could call Angel since my phone's off. That's a hour round trip since I walked. And sat on the internet there in between. No big deal, you'll get at least another one.

Last night was as disastrous as I thought it would be. Everything is okay now but I definitely caused a scene in Bent. I really don't care who saw me tho, they don't me. lol. And I was sober too so I won't even try to blame it on that.

Today I worked on Angel's website/blog for her A.P. History class. After several attempts we finally got it the way she wanted it. I just hope the site's more user friendly for the kids then it was for me.

We got Coldstone and she left around seven-ish.

Now I type alone. Technically Ed's downstairs and the menu from the School For Scoundrels DVD is playing over and over. I probably have another hour in me before I crash even tho I have no class until 3:30. Lucky me.

I should write something. Anything in fact. Maybe I will. Food would be nice too.

Irregular week goals:
Work on B Hyphen.com redesign
Update HHM: The Blog
Write/record some new songs
Promote 6'6 show this Thursday
Work on Robin issues

I probably will have none of this done by next Sunday. lol.

Because I should be doing it more. I'm gonna try to have at least one post a day from now where I actually type something from here until 2009. Not too difficult a task right? Weekends don't count tho. lol.

Went to FallFest last night, which is WVU's big welcome back concert they have every year. Lupe Fiasco was here and he KILLED it. Matt and I weren't in the best spots ever but I saw the whole show thanks to the huge video screen. I studied his show a lot too. Anytime I can soak up some knowledge that's going to make my stage show better, I'll take it.

I've now seen live:
Jay-Z
R. Kelly
Kanye West
Usher
Talib Kweli
Common (for 10 minutes. Stupid thunderstorm!)
Lupe Fiasco
Black Eyed Peas
The Roots
Pete Rock (DJ)
Fatman Scoop (DJ)
Redman
Boot Camp Clik
Memphis Bleek, Freeway, Young Gunz (they all came out during Jay's set, so they count. lol.)

Back in school. Day 2 went fine. Now I just have to get through one more year and a few summer classes and I'm done. Really.

Music is kinda at a standstill. I haven't done a new song since I did a song for DJ Coutz' album. I redesigned my myspace tho. lol. You can check it out at http://www.myspace.com/spideyville and you can also listen to or download The Mind's Mixtape volume Three there. The good news is I've never been more comfortable on stage and my live show is the best it's ever been. I really feel I'm starting to come into my own there.

Matt and I's blog is in the middle of reconstruction. I got a little too happy with trying to post every single new song that came out and I found myself dedicating 5 hours of a recent Saturday just to updating the blog with 2 weeks worth of missed tracks. So I'm reconstructing the site back into form that Matt and I originally invisioned. Johnathan also joined the site as a contributor but he has yet to contribute. lol. You can check that out at http://www.hiphopmanifesto.org. We'll also have the new episode of the podcast soon too.

I have an update I need to do for Marvel Anthology. It's only two issues but anything new is always welcome. I have three issues of Robin I'm about to turn in at DCA. My first issues in over a year and a half. I'm a great writer by the way. lol.

I'm going to be redesigning B Hyphen.com again. lol. I can't find something that I truly like enough to leave it there. But I got some ideas, hopefully something good will come of it.

I also plan on continuing and finishing my Behind The Music series for The Mind's Mixtape volume II and The Thunderstorm Mixtape. Then I can do the one for volume Three. I wanted to start on volume Three but I didn't think it was right to skip two mixtapes.

For now tho, I think that covers all the bases. Here's two facebook photo galleries from my last two shows.

From my homie [info]dferguson:

It's B HYPHEN, Son!
Kelen Conley is one of those individuals who I've known online forever it seems like. Through the modern miracle of our Internet age we've become friends without ever actually meeting. In the years we've grown to know each other I've discovered that he isn't just a helluva fan fiction writer he's also a wonderful rapper/musician. And now he's branching out into the podosphere with the excellent HIP-HOP MANIFESTO!!! which I hope will continue for a long time as I love the energy and banter between Kelen and his co-host Chivalry. Get yourself over to http://hiphopmanifesto.podomatic.com/ to check out the podcast and for everything else good that Kelen is doing, bounce on over to http://www.bhyphen.com/ and you can also bask in the glow from the sun that is Kelen Conley.

In the tradition of Better In The Dark, Matt and I have also started our own podcast. No, not about movies, I can leave that to D and Tom, but about hip-hop. All things hip-hop. Just two guys who love hip-hop talking about hip-hop. I just posted our first episode last night. PLEASE take a listen and let me know what you think. And I hope you don't think it borrows too much from BITD.
